About
BIO Based in Missouri, I focus on creating biomorphic sculptures discussing amphibians as environmental indicators; through creek clean-up initiatives, I repurpose found materials, which supports the theme of environmental impact in my work. I have exhibited in solo and group exhibitions and focus on species which are endemic locally and across the United States, as well as nonnative species like the Cane Toad. My goal is to highlight the significant role amphibians play in our ecosystem. In my free time, I volunteer with environmental clean-up groups and teach wheel throwing and hand building at local craft centers. STATEMENT I have been focusing on non-native species, adopting the image of the Cane Toad as a representation of how human intervention can have unforseen results on the environment. These toads were introduced in Australia as a means of pest control, but as they are highly efficient hunters, they are detrimental to native species and disrupt the balance in the ecosystem. As global temperatures change, Cane Toads are making their way across several non-native landscapes. By building each head by hand, I create a repetitive motion that mimics the repetitive, unfortunate necessity of culling these invasive species.
